The enclosed report from the Manager of our Machinery Department does not deal with what in my opinion is the chief factor against the use of English Cars in the East generaly, and that is the question of price. I give below what would likely be the selling prices of English Cars on latest prices and current exchange.

The small powered English car has the advantage in the homeland of low taxation and economy in operation. In Hongkong taration does not depend on horsepower and is rela- tively light, so long as the care are not owner driven and are garaged outside one's residence, the economy of a small car in gasolene and tyres bears only a small proportion to the total cost of upkeep, and most purchasers of cars here care little about it. Also as most of the cars are used for pleasure & roomy vehicle is in demand, With regard to hiring cars the first cost is so important that English Cars are ignored.

Apart therefore from such cars as Rolls Royce, Napier, eto., the English Car atanda little chance in this market unless the cost can be reduced. If this oan be done and atten-
